It’s no secret that our blog is named for one of my favorite Phish songs, “Scents and Subtle Sounds.” The song has been played a total of 15 times since it debuted in 2003, including only three performances during 3.0. With that said, I don’t believe the song has yet to reach it’s full jam potential. A year ago, we posted our top five versions of S&SS. The top version played by far was the July 30, 2003 in Camden, New Jersey.

This show is notable for many reasons (“Secret Smile” encore), but this is hands down the best version of “Scents” played to date. The jam starts around 6:30 mark and the band doesn’t waste much time before bringing the jam to type II territory. The jam picks up steam at the 21 min mark, but at about the 25 min mark the jam starts to get dirty with an all out band assault. The is a must listen after the 25 min mark.
The folks at Hidden Track recently posted pro-shot footage of this incredible performance and you can enjoy it below.
I was born, raised and currently reside in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago. I founded Scents and Subtle Sounds on August 18, 2009 after deciding I needed an avenue to share my passion for music. I saw my first concert in 1994 and hundreds of shows later (and counting), live music still does IT for me.
