With Bon Iver on hiatus, Justin Vernon has been keeping plenty busy. In 2013 alone, Vernon released an album with his side project, The Shouting Matches, contributed vocals on three tracks for Kanye West’s new album Yeezus, and is producing the new album from Blind Boys of Alabama. If that wasn’t enough, Vernon will revive another side-project, Volcano Choir.

In 2009, the band released their debut album Unmap, but has been dormant ever since. On September 3 that will all change, with the release of Repave, the bands first new material in four years. The group will also hit the road beginning with a show on September 6 at Metro in Chicago. The band has shared “Byegone”, the first track from Repave.

Last year before a Radiohead concert at Toronto’s Downsview Park, a stage collapse killed one person and injured three others. On Friday, The Ministry of Labour announced 13 charges have been filed against Live Nation, a staging company and an engineer. The charges come just shy of one year since the incident in which Radiohead drum tech Scott Johnson was killed.

Live Nation released the following statement in light of the charges:

“We absolutely maintain that Live Nation and our employees did everything possible to ensure the safety of anyone who was on or near the stage involved in the tragic incident that led to the unfortunate death of Mr. Scott Johnson.”

According to The Toronto Star, if convicted, the maximum penalty for a corporation is $500,000 per charge. Individuals charged in the case face a $25,000 fine or up to a year in prison.

Since returning from their hiatus last year, Sigur Rós has wasted no time getting back into the game . On June 18, the band will release Kveikur, their second full length album in as many years. The album marks their first release since Kjartan Sveinsson departed the band in 2012 and first ever as a trio. Fans might be a little caught off guard by the new music as the band has adopted a much more abrasive sound than on the previous albums.

On August 20, Tedeschi Trucks Band will release Made Up Mind, their follow up to their 2011 Grammy Award winning debut album Revelator. The album was recored at Derek and Susan’s Swamp Raga Studios in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. The album features an impressive list of collaborations including Jim Scott, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Krasno, Oliver Wood, Gary Louris, Sonya Kitchell, John Leventhal, Pino Palladino, Bakithi Kumalo, Dave Monsey and George Reiff.

Foxygen‘s Jonathan Rado has announced that he will release his debut solo album, Law and Order this September via Woodsist. You can check out the first single, “Faces”, which we happen to be really digging. Rado hasn’t announced any solo shows, but Foxygen has a slew of headlining and festival dates booked through October.

On June 25, Chicago gospel legend Mavis Staples will release her new album, One True Vine via ANTI-. The album was produced by Wilco‘s Jeff Tweedy and was recorded at the Wilco Loft in Chicago. The second single, “I like the Things About Me” is much edgier than anything on 2010′s You Are Not Alone.The video, which features still photos of the recording session, really gives fans an idea of the connection that Tweedy and Staples have in the studio. Jeff Tweedy’s son, Spencer as well as other musicians that appear on the record appear in the video.

Staples will celebrate the release of One True Vine with a show on June 26 at the The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles.

The official aftershows for Lollapalooza have been announced. The after parties will begin two days before the festival begins and stretch into the wee hours of the mornings each night. Notable artists include Thievery Corporation, Lana Del Rey, Hot Chip, Father John Misty, Local Natives, The Lumineers, Death Grips, Band of Horses, Kendrick Lamar, Baroness, Wavves and Alt-J.

On Saturday night, due to severe weather, Wilco played an abbreviated headlining set at the Nelsonville Music Festival. The Chicago sexted shook up the first part of their setlist up before settling into a more traditional setlist to close the set. The show opened with “Forget The Flowers”, “Muzzle Of Bees”, the super rare “Should’ve Been In Love”, which has only been played twice in nearly three years, and “Company In My Back”.

The rest of the set featured Wilco classics including “Poor Places > Art Of Almost”, “Impossible Germany”, “Handshake Drugs”, “Jesus, Etc.”, “Heavy Metal Drummer”, “Dawned On Me”, “A Shot in the Arm”.

For the encore, Jeff Tweedy and Company welcomed members of Calexcio to the stage for “California Stars” and the show closing “I’m the Man Who Loves You”. Wilco’s next gig is an appearance at Bonnaroo where they will play the What Stage right before Sir Paul McCartney. >>

I am still moving into my new digs, but life has finally settled down and the site will once again come alive. With that said, I would like to announce a new Phish giveaway here at S&SS. We have a shiny new copy of the 6-CD Ventura box set complements of the folks at Phish, Inc. Ventura highlights two shows from the bands ’97 and ’98 summer tours. Both shows took place at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, California on July 30, 1997 and July 20, 1998 respectively.

The audio clips the band has released sound absolutely amazing and this archival release will be a welcome addition to any Phish fan’s collection. Check out all of the details on how to be a winner after the break. >>

For almost four years, I lived across the street from the Goose Island Clybourn Brewpub before moving out of Lincoln Park. Over the course of those  years, I enjoyed some truly remarkable beers, made some great friends and forged memories I won’t soon forget. Even though I don’t live as close as I used to, I still frequent the brewpub on an almost weekly basis. In fact, the first person I ever met through my blog was a former Goose Island employee, who I am still friends with. To this day, it remains my favorite place in Chicago to enjoy a beer.

Last weekend, with over 50 beers available and food to die for, Goose Island founder, John Hall threw one hell of a 25th anniversary party. While Hall did sell the production brewery on Fulton St. to AB InBev, Hall still owns the Clybourn and Wrigleyville locations where creativity is thriving. While the beer was the obvious focus of the evening, there was also a great video showing the history of the brewery. >>
